Metric is a Canadian indie rock and new wave band founded in Toronto in 1998.

The band consists of Emily Haines (vocals, synthesizers, guitar, piano), James Shaw (guitar, synthesizers, theremin, backing vocals), Joshua Winstead (bass, synthesizers, backing vocals), and Joules Scott-Key (drums, percussion).

The band initially began as a collaboration between Haines and Shaw.

They met in Toronto and later moved to Brooklyn, New York, where they started recording their early material.

The duo released an EP titled “Mainstream” in 1998 under the band name “Mainstream,” but soon changed the name to Metric, a term reflecting their interest in electronic music and metrics of beats and rhythm.

Metric gained significant attention with their debut album, “Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?” released in 2003.

The album was well-received for its blend of indie rock and new wave influences, featuring standout tracks like “Combat Baby” and “Dead Disco.”

Their sophomore album, “Live It Out” (2005), further established their presence in the indie music scene, featuring hits like “Monster Hospital” and “Poster of a Girl.”

Their latest album, Formentera II, was released in October of 2023.
