Fake Shark front man discusses their new single ‘Bummer Summer’, their forthcoming album and two upcoming shows in Ontario

Vancouver-based alt-rock band Fake Shark released their new grunge track ‘Bummer Summer’ on June 22, 2023.

“‘Bummer Summer’ is a song about people who burn lots of bridges thinking there will be no repercussions for their actions and then feel sorry for themselves,” said Kevin “Kevvy Mental” Maher, the lead vocalist and programmer for the band.

“I wrote it from the perspective of someone who hurts everyone around them and then is surprised to find themselves alone while everyone else is enjoying themselves and it was their own fault. It was fun to think so sarcastically and put myself in their shoes.”

Fake Shark kicked off the year with the release of anthemic banger ‘Save Me’, which overflows with the band’s hallmark blend of bright buoyant pop and hooky alt rock.

The track soared up the radio charts, hitting #1 on the Breaking Alt chart, and landed in the Top 30 on the Rock charts.

With over 4 million streams to their name and 2-million views on YouTube, it’s easy to see why Fake Shark have been quoted as “one of Canada’s best bands,” (Outland Culture).

Their music has appeared on various Spotify playlists including New Music Friday Canada, Ready to Rock, Rock Favourites, Indie All Stars, Rock Your Block, Fresh Finds, It’s a Bop, All New Rock etc., while also being featured in various TV shows and commercials including an Apple commercial, Netflix’s Pretty Little Things, CBS Love Island, MTV Catfish, Showtime’s Dice, Degrassi, See No Evil, and Vendetta.

Recently, the group was nominated for three 2022 Indie Awards, including ‘Album of the Year,’ ‘Rock/Alternative Group of the Year,’ and ‘Song of the Year’ for their smash ‘Loser’ which charted at #3 on the Canadian Alternative Radio chart, and #9 on the Breaking Alt chart.

The band has received praise from the likes of Billboard, VICE, CBC Music, Exclaim, and more.

After performing at the Vancouver Craft Beer Week on Saturday, July 8, 2023, Fake Shark will be making the trek to Ontario for two shows later this summer, at The Drake Hotel in Toronto on Friday, August 18 and the following day at Riverfest in Elora on Saturday, August 19, 2023.
