JUNO-award-winning rock quartet The Beaches brought their high energy, pop-rock sound to Cavendish, Prince Edward Island on Saturday, September 14, 2024 on the second and final day of the Sommo Festival.
“There are a few fucking friends out here, eh?” Jordan Miller, the lead vocalist and bass guitar player for the band, told the crowd.
“You’ve always said that the best part of Canada is the East Coast… and the best part of the East Coast is PEI, baby.”
After more than a decade together as a band, the Toronto rockers are doing everything their way.
Sisters Jordan Miller and Kylie Miller (guitar), plus closest friends Leandra Earl (guitar and keys), and Eliza Enman-McDaniel (drums), are entering a new era.
On the new album Blame My Ex, the four-time Juno Award-winning Toronto band channels heartbreak into self-discovery through 10 exuberant songs that revel in pain and redemption.
The lead single, “Blame Brett,” an acerbic pop-rock knockout Jordan calls “a song for all the hot messes out there,” has racked up over 70 million streams on Spotify and over 10 million views on TikTok.
The track peaked at Number Two on Spotify’s U.S. Viral chart, Number 20 at Alternative Radio in the U.S., and Number One at Alt Radio in Canada for 13 consecutive weeks, making it the biggest alternative radio hit of the year.
Mark Hoppus of blink182, Nelly Furtado, and Demi Lovato are all fans of the track.
Since the success of “Blame Brett,” The Beaches sold out their worldwide Blame My Ex tour, including Toronto’s Budweiser Stage three months ahead of their show, Vancouver’s Orpheum, Brooklyn’s Williamsburg Music Hall twice, Los Angeles’s Troubador twice, and London, UK’s O2 Forum Kentish Town.
During their Sommo Fest performance, the band commented on having many friends and family from the area, enjoying the food and beaches on the coast.
Guitarist Leandra Earl also commented on the light up PlayWise bracelets in the audience, which fans connected together, forming a long lit up line in the crowd.
“I like the train going on out there,” Leandra said.
“I’ve been watching it the whole show, it gets longer, I love it. I kind of want it to come up to me. It’s mesmerizing. I want to connect with you guys and I want it to go all the way to the back.”
The band took turns throughout their engaging performance tasking the spotlight down the long extended stage, which reached into the audience.
At one point, Jordan removed her leather jacket and tossed it to a fan in the audience.
“I thought you loved that jacket?” Leandra asked her.
“I love my fans more,” Jordan replied.
For their encore tune ‘Blame Brett’, the band welcomed fellow Canadian TALK on stage with them, to sing along with the catchy chorus.
“Thank-you so much, PEI,” Jordan told the crowd.
“It’s been such a pleasure to come back and see so many of your beautiful faces.”
