Sporting a baby blue Chicago Cubs jersey, Gary Clark Jr. brought his bluesy guitar talents to the Home Plate stage at the Innings Festival on February 22, 2025.
“My wife asked me, she’s like ‘why did you buy that dumbass blue hat?’ Because it goes with my Cubs jersey, that’s why,” Clark Jr. told the audience, as the crowd baked under the Tempe, Arizona sun.
Earlier in the weekend, the Austin, Texas singer and guitarist threw out a ceremonial first pitch at Sloan Park, the spring training home of the Chicago Cubs, in nearby Mesa, Arizona.
Back on stage at Innings, Clark Jr. looked possessed at times during his solos—eyes closed, head back, guitar picks flying into the crowd. He led his band through a fiery fusion of blues, rock, and soul.
The blistering intensity of the music mirrored the scorching mid-afternoon heat.
“We alright?” Clark Jr. asked the crowd, before taking a long pull on a bottle of water.
“It’s very important. Just give me a second before I pass out up here.”
Later in the set, Clark Jr. took some time to gaze into the Innings crowd.
“Just looking at you back, I think it’s fair, right?” he said.
“You look good. It’s about to get funky on y’all asses real quick.”
