Cage The Elephant | ALTer EGO 2026

ALTer EGO 2026 launched with a fiery punch as Cage The Elephant tore into the night with a blazing, pyro-heavy set that felt every bit like a closer.

The Kentucky rockers set the tone immediately, delivering high-energy, leaping rock ’n’ roll that had the Los Angeles crowd locked in from the first note. It was the kind of performance that could have capped the night, not opened it.

“It’s an honour and a privilege to be here,” singer Matt Shultz told the eager crowd, before offering a quick nod to the evening’s hosts. “Thank you, iHeart, big time,” he added, acknowledging the lineup of “talented people” still to come on the ALTer EGO stage.

Glitchy effects layered over the live video feed gave the set a slightly warped edge, while the red wash of the lighting mirrored iHeartRadio’s signature colour, blanketing the venue throughout the night as the broadcaster marked its ninth annual celebration.

Taking a brief break from turning his microphone stand into a launchpad, Shultz paused to introduce the band, a moment punctuated by an audible kiss on the cheek from his brother and guitarist, Brad Shultz.

As swirling orange flames licked the stage, Matt beckoned the crowd closer for the closing number, Come A Little Closer, pulling the room inward for a final, communal surge. Earlier, during Trouble, he tweaked the lyrics with a grin, admitting to the audience, “I’ve already lost my mind.”

The nine-song set leaned heavily on hits that have dominated iHeartRadio airwaves for years, a reminder of just how deeply embedded Cage The Elephant remains in modern alt-rock rotation.

Cage has long been a staple of SWOMP coverage, with previous stops including Pine Knob in Clarkston, Michigan in 2024, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in May 2025, and GLC Live at 20 Monroe in Grand Rapids that October. Next up, we’ll catch them again at the Innings Festival in Tempe, Arizona, next month.
