What do The Trews and the Golden Girls have in common? SWOMP ‘Issue Zero’

I mean, we needed an excuse to place the Golden Girls t-shirt inside the pages of SWOMP Magazine ‘Issue Zero’, right?!

This photo snapped by Dana brings smiles to our faces and great memories of interviewing The Trews before their set last year at the inaugural Rockin’ Thunder Music Festival in Edmonton, Alberta.

And Blanche, Rose, Dorothy and Sophia aside, having our latest work with The Trews was a must for us to have inside, considering the history with SWOMP and band.

I had the chance to interview John-Angus McDonald 13-plus years ago, during the first iteration of SWOMP, when The Trews were headlining Retrofest in Chatham. Fast forward to 2023, when we decided to relaunch, The Trews and their team were one of the first to hop on board and give us a chance, as well.

Dana interviewed John-Angus and they were the first band to approve photos and review credentials for us, giving SWOMP the opportunity to cover their show on a bitterly cold February night in 2023 at The Shelter in downtown Detroit, Michigan.

It was an opportunity to see if my camera still worked and it gave us the chance to take in a show for the first time in a while, with press credentials around our necks and a job to do.

Our chat with Colin, Jack and John-Angus dove into the brotherly connection in the band, their work with the Emmons brothers from The Glorious Sons and to discuss the (at the time) soon-to-be-released new studio album, The Bloody Light.

Fast forward to today, the album was nominated for a JUNO Award for Rock Album of the Year!

Photos from the Edmonton show and my interview with the guys is all featured inside the pages of SWOMP Magazine ‘Issue Zero’!
