System of a Down brought Sick New World to a close with a powerful, and at times surreal, headlining set at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds.
“This is System of a Down style rock and roll music,” guitarist Daron Malakian told the crowd at the start, setting the tone for a performance packed with intensity and fan favourites.
Midway through the set, a rare desert rain began to fall – an unusual moment in a city that averages just a few dozen rainy days a year – adding to the atmosphere as the band powered through its setlist.
Frontman Serj Tankian checked in with the crowd during “B.Y.O.B.,” asking, “Are you guys having a good time?” while the band also worked in a localized twist during “Prison Song,” altering a lyric to reference Las Vegas.
For some in attendance, the performance marked a long-awaited return.
It has been two decades since System of a Down last headlined a show seen by SWOMP, dating back to Ozzfest 2006.
Following the set, the band thanked fans on social media.
“Thank you to everyone who came out to Sin City for another unforgettable year of System Of A Down style rock and roll music,” the band posted. “See you at Sick New World Texas.”
The performance capped a busy year for the group, which continues to headline major shows worldwide. Upcoming dates include multiple stadium performances across Europe in cities such as Paris, Berlin, London and Warsaw, along with shows in Mexico City in May.
System of a Down is also scheduled to return for the Texas edition of Sick New World in October.
