Daniel Lanois discusses intimate tour across Ontario, including August 8 show at Sarnia’s Imperial Theatre

Grammy-winning producer, musician and songwriter Daniel Lanois is returning to Ontario this summer for a series of intimate performances with the Daniel Lanois Trio.

The tour includes stops in Orillia, Lindsay, Meaford, Sarnia, Fergus and Picton.

Lanois is widely recognized for his work as a producer and collaborator with artists including Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, U2, Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan and Neil Young.

SWOMP caught up with Lanois for an interview to discuss the tour, his latest album Belladonna Nocturne and his decorated career. Listen, below:

The tour performances will feature immersive soundscapes and the trio’s harmony-driven approach in the theatre venues across the province.

Joining Lanois on stage are Jermaine Holmes on drums and vocals, and Jim Wilson on bass and vocals. Together, the trio blends atmospheric instrumentation with three-part vocal harmonies.

“The road is calling as the music keeps on guiding me through the labyrinths of song, messages and inventions,” said Lanois. “As music rides the airwaves, we continue to troubadour our way to the stage for that exchange we love — live performance.”

According to organizers, the trio’s musical approach developed in a small chapel on the outskirts of Berlin, where the natural acoustics inspired the group to emphasize vocal harmonies with minimal instrumentation.

“The original instrument, that being the voice, is alive and well in this trio configuration,” said Lanois.
