Just months after SWOMP covered their headline performance at the inaugural Rockin’ Thunder music festival in Edmonton, Weezer returned to the festival circuit with a set at Corona Capital in Mexico City on Nov. 16, 2025. The band travelled 4,789 kilometres from their last SWOMP-covered appearance, greeting the crowd with frontman Rivers Cuomo’s cheerful, “Hola!, Mexico.”
For the Mexico City show, the band was joined by drummer Josh Freese, the Swiss Army Knife of rock percussionists who has played with Weezer in the past in addition to a long list of other major acts. Over the past year, Freese joined Nine Inch Nails, essentially swapping places with former NIN drummer Ilan Rubin, who took Freese’s spot as the new Foo Fighters drummer.
Freese acknowledged the temporary reunion with Weezer on social media ahead of the show. “ So I went down to South America with Weezer and I’ll be playing with them this Sunday in Mexico City and then the first week of December in Australia,” he posted.
“Just to be clear, Pat is still the drummer in Weezer…. always has been and always will be. But he also just happens to be a ripping guitarist. He also just happens to be one of my closest friends. In 2009 he wanted to step away from the drums for a little while and play some guitar so I handled the drum duties with them for almost 3 years.”
Freese added: “We had a great time and here we are 13 years later doing it again. Always fun hanging out with those guys and there’s no shortage of iconic, alterno-rock classics that are a blast to play. As of now the upcoming stuff is Nov 16 in Mexico City, the first week or so of December in Australia and after that it’s anyone’s guess! And I will absolutely be playing with NIN Feb/ March continuing on the Peel It Back tour. Can’t wait! 🔥🔥🔥”
Freese appeared all smiles behind the kit during the set, which unfolded under a warm Mexico City sky as Weezer delivered a run of mid-90s staples. Highlights included “Longtime Sunshine,” technically a cover of a Cuomo solo track, and a roaring take on Hole’s “Celebrity Skin.”

Weezer has long been a fixture in SWOMP’s pages, having first covered them in 2013 during the original era of SWOMP at a casino show in Windsor. Coverage resumed a decade later at Louder Than Life in Louisville in 2023, followed by the band’s 2025 appearances in Edmonton and now Mexico City.
